Participant comments
- I realized once again that in order to facilitate smooth facilitation, it is important to have a "flow" of the discussion, not just a discussion. The first important thing in that flow is to set the agenda and goals. It is also essential to clearly share this with the participants of the meeting. In addition, through this lecture and exercise, I learned that advance preparation regarding the agenda, an attitude of "listening" carefully to the opinions of the participants, and the process of consensus building are also very important. Without advance preparation, the discussion cannot proceed smoothly. Therefore, collecting information in advance and organizing the points of discussion are essential. Furthermore, I felt that it would be effective to first listen to the opinions of each participant, make a proposal, and then proceed with the discussion based on that, rather than preparing and then presenting a proposal from the beginning.
- I felt that the skills I gained from preparing for meetings and facilitation would be useful in the lab and at work.
- By actually experiencing a mini-conference, I realized once again that when leading (or secretly facilitating) a meeting, clearly defining the meeting's goals and time allocation helps to reduce hesitation and makes it easier for all meeting participants to have a more meaningful discussion.
- It is recommended that you decide the purpose of your discussion with your professor in advance to ensure smooth proceedings.
