1. Outline of the Project
As a research institute representing the three universities including Tohoku University and Nagoya University, Hokkaido University made a project proposal to participate in the Project for Establishing a Consortium for the Development of Human Resources in Science and Technology (Program for Training Researchers for the Next Generation) promoted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). After being approved by MEXT, this project started in FY 2014. In this project, the three universities (Hokkaido University, Tohoku University and Nagoya University) form a consortium where they can bring together resources for the development of human resources, with the aim of constructing a system for developing next-generation human resources for various fields.
2. Vision of the consortium
The consortium organized by Japan’s representing three universities will establish a system for fostering researchers for the next generation, with formation of an external evaluation committee, encapsulating cooperative research institutes (overseas universities and research institutes, domestic and overseas companies, etc.), and by sharing well-developed environment for research and human resource development of the three universities that will form a common platform for the development of human resources in science and technology that provide researchers of doctoral degrees with diverse career path alternatives while forming a system for advancing mobility of the researchers.
3. Policies and principles of human resource development by the consortium
Hokkaido University, Tohoku University and Nagoya University will effectively share resources and know-how on research and development of the human resources they have accumulated, with a view to encouraging young researchers to further deepen their expertise in an autonomous environment. At the same time, the universities will nurture human resources in science and technology for the next generation who have an ability to demonstrate their true value in various situation at home and abroad, that is, researchers with internationality and transferable skills. Also, the fostering period is generally set to be as long as five years, which encourages them to acquire a wide range of fundamental knowledge needed by researchers. This project consists of two programs: the Program for Training Researchers for the Next Generation, intended for specially appointed assistant professors, and the Program for the Cooperative Development of Innovative Human Resources, intended for PD and DC researchers.
