Participant comments

1st
  • Even though I knew that I would be presenting my research at a seminar related to job hunting, when I actually started preparing my presentation materials I realized that I had created one that focused on the "research content" rather than on "me."
  • I learned that personality is also important for doctoral candidates. In addition, in group work, we were able to discuss how to incorporate personality aspects into slides.
  • Communicating research and communicating research skills are different. I learned that in interviews, it is necessary to communicate your own abilities, including your personality, rather than just explaining the research itself.
  • In the recruitment process, rather than asking candidates to understand the details of the research, it is important to convey the values and circumstances that led to the research, and how you interacted with others as you carried it out.
2nd
  • I realized that when presenting research at a conference, science communication, entrepreneurial job hunting, or academic job hunting, it is necessary to prepare the content and ideas according to each purpose. I often hear people say, "Make a presentation that suits the audience and the occasion," but I have never had a chance to experience this, so this was a good opportunity.
  • I learned that it is important to have a perspective of what the hiring manager is looking at. I learned that in a presentation, explaining what you have been thinking and doing up until now, rather than just the results of your research, is what will appeal to your research ability.
  • The importance of the research process (why you arrived at that approach, what you did, etc.) should be emphasized rather than the content of the research.
