overview
Drug development in the pharmaceutical industry is dynamic. When venture companies and startups (including those originating from academia) achieve a certain level of success, large corporations often acquire their research results and enter the large-scale clinical development stage. Clinical development often requires trillions of yen, and companies are racking their brains to reduce costs, streamline processes, and expedite approval. To improve efficiency, many animal experiments and pharmacological testing are outsourced, leading to the development of collaborative relationships with academia. Careers at pharmaceutical companies (sponsors) and contract research organizations (CROs) are fluid, depending on each individual's area of expertise. Understanding the matrix team structure of pharmaceutical companies and the roles of each function is important for future career planning, as it helps identify areas where you can demonstrate your strengths.
