Participant comments

  • I realized that by utilizing my strengths and common goals with the other party, rather than just considering direct gains and losses, I can lead to negotiations that are satisfactory to both myself and the other party.
  • When I look back on the relationships I have in my daily life, I realize that they are a constant process of negotiation. That is why I want to make use of what I learned in this class.
  • I had always thought of negotiations as simply a discussion of whether to divide a pie 60:40 or 50:50, but a good negotiation is one that allows both parties to reach a conclusion that benefits them more than the expected compromise.
  • I would like to use this experience when consulting with my supervisor and in future discussions at work. By expressing my thoughts accurately while respecting the other person's position, I would like to build relationships of trust and aim for smooth communication.
  • I would like to be able to make more constructive suggestions in response to instructions from my professors that I have been unable to refuse and that have been a burden until now.
  • From now on, I would like to be more conscious of "reaching a common understanding" when interacting with my supervisor in the lab and when conducting research with private companies as an RA.
