I-HoP Transferable Skills Seminar – Potential Long-term Effects of the Coronavirus Pandemic in the Research Community –

We would like to organize an online seminar for academics coping with current COVID-19 situation.

Impact at Academic Journals and Publishers
-New initiatives such as collections of COVID-19 papers, preprint screening, and volunteer reviewes
-Temporary policy changes to support researchers,
e.g., journal-dependent deadline extensions
-Rapid reviewing and retracting COVID-19 manuscripts
-Journals acting as hubs for information

Impact at Institutions and Researchers
-Managing reduced access to research facilities and equipment
-Facing the potential for an overall decline in research output
(number of research projects and published manuscripts)
-Facing changing priorities for funding agencies
-Overcoming the limitations of socially distanced research

Impact on Individual Researchers
-Adapting digital tools for use in academic setting
-The improtance of networking with other scientists from a distance
-Coping with the unanticipated impact of the pandemic on our mental health

Mr. Greg Adams is the Manager of the Production Division at FORTE Science Communications in Tokyo.
FORTE is a global leader in STEM editing, translation, and publishing. Greg is a 15-year veteran of the science communications industry.
In the course of his career, he has edited a wide range of medical and technical papers that have been published in high-impact journals around the world. Based on his extensive experience in the academic publishing industry, ranging from the planning stage to the post-publication stage, Greg has provided practical training on the skills necessary to write research manuscripts to both young researchers and senior scientists at universities, hospitals, and research centers throughout Japan. In addition, he provides behavioral training and coaching in oral presentation skills for both small groups and large audiences.
